Repair of the Baltic Cable (transmission) between Germany and Sweden
In March 2011 a fault occurred on The Baltic Cable (HVDC) north east of Rostock in the Baltic Sea, and consequently ABB who produced the cable originally was contracted to perform a repair of the cable.
Due to the success of the previous repair of the cable in 2009, ABB subcontracted JD-contractor A/S for the supply of a repair barge, supporting tugs, equipment and personnel to carry out the repair with ABB jointers and jointing equipment.
Consequently JD-Contractor A/S was responsible for all the maritime work and handling of the cable, while ABB was responsible for jointing the cable and providing all the necessary parts and equipment for testing and repairing of the cable.
The repair was carried out from the cable laying barge Henry P. Lading supported by the tugs Bauge/Bure and Naja and the Cable and Diving vessel C/S Cable One.
The repair of Baltic Cable was carried out successfully and without incident within the scheduled time.
The repair was carried out very quickly , and as little as 7 days passed from commencing the first joint until the second joint was placed safely on the seabed.
The Baltic Cable was back in operation within three weeks of C/B Henry P. Lading departing to Karlsstat to pick up the spare cable used for the job.
