Connecting Lithuania to Northern European Grid

JD-Contractor A/S have made a small contribution to connecting Lithuania to Northern European Grid by performing Pre-lay Grapnel Run operations along the NordBalt cable route. The start of operation of the new NordBalt cable is scheduled for December 2015.

In March 2015 JD-Contractor A/S finalized the third and final campaign of Pre-lay Grapnel Run operations along the proposed NordBalt cable route towards the Swedish landfall as a subcontract to ABB. The two previous campaigns were performed in April and June 2014 prior to the installation of the first cable sections in Lithuanian waters.

The NordBalt cable is new power link connecting the Lithuanian and Swedish power transmission systems. The length of the 700 MW link is about 450 km. The link will be formed of high-voltage direct-current undersea and underground cables and of current converter stations in Lithuania and Sweden.

This new electricity bridge will enable Lithuania to purchase electricity from Northern European countries that are rich in hydro energy resources. NordBalt will be an alternative channel for electricity import and export that will help Lithuania avoid dependence on the sole supplier in the East. The strategic power project is implemented by Litgrid, the Lithuanian transmission system operator, and Svenska Kraftnät, the Swedish transmission system operator. Supply and installation of the cable have been contracted to ABB who then again subcontracted JD-Contractor to perform the Pre-lay Grapnel Run operations on their behalf.

The successful completion of yet another subcontract for ABB is an example of the good and trusting cooperation between JD-Contractor and ABB.
