Reinforcement of the 150 kV electricity transmission grid in the southern and central part of Denmark

Energinet.dk A/S has planned a reinforcement of the 150 kV electricity transmission grid in the southern and central part of Denmark known as the project named JFK.

A part of this reinforcement plan was two new submarine cable connections. The two submarine cable connections are now located in Lillebælt Straight North (JFK N) and Lillebælt Straight South (JFK S).

Energinet.dk awarded JD-Contractor A/S the contract for transport and laying as well as protection of the two new cables as well as the decommissioning of the old replaced subsea cables.

The new cables were delivered by NEXANS cable factory in Halden, Norway.

Many of JD-Contractors vessels were involved in this project including: H.P. Lading, Sima, Cable One, Marcos, Naja, Honte and Lillebjørn.

The JFK project was completed successfully in accordance with the method statements and risk assessments developed for the project and within the estimated time schedule. Good cooperation between all parties involved contributed to an efficient cable protection with high focus on safety during the operations. The high focus of safety and the use of HSE tools adopted in the JDC HSE plan contributed to a positive result with high satisfaction within JDC. As a result during the JFK project no incidents involving personal injuries or near misses occurred.

Good cooperation between ENDK, NEXANS and JDC has been a key to the success and completion of the project on time.

The decommissioning and removal of the cables for JFK is still pending to be carried out upon completion of the termination work of the new installed JFK cables planned for execution Q1 2017.
